Collecting ART is one of the most enjoyable and viable investments, essential to our wellbeing, and a good alternative, long-term
monetary investment strategy.

Image: Image: Brett Whiteley (1939-1992) 'Kurrajong and Blue Wren' Oil and Collage on Board.Buying artworks share the characteristics with both stock investments and real estate, but it is fundamentally a unique alternative asset class.

Collecting art is a great investment for anyone looking to add value to their portfolio.

A carefully selected work of art of impeccable provenance by an artist you admire, can offer a strong capital growth for generations to come.

Original, unique, and one-of-a-kind artworks often come with the greatest potential payoff. Prints are more affordable however less likely to turn a profit.

While an artworks are value-like property, potentially can offer liquidity like stocks, but it operates primarily on passion, and perception-driven subjective value. Like stocks, the barrier to entry can be low (prints), and high-demand pieces can appreciate rapidly based on market trends.

Ideally, buying art
you love, for the joy it gives, ought to take priority above the monetary investment.

Art Tangibility: You own a physical asset that provides functional use and enjoyment.

Art Value Drivers: Artworks value is driven by artist reputation, scarcity, cultural significance, and demand.

Image: Arthur Boyd (1920-1999) 'Pulpit Rock Shoalhaven River' Oil on Canvas. The "Passion Dividend": Art offers an emotional and aesthetic dividend. Unlike a stock certificate or a deed, you live with it and enjoy it, making it a "passion asset" rather than a purely logical financial instrument.

Hedging: Because art values correlate more with accumulated global wealth and cultural demand rather than interest rates, they historically serve as a unique hedge against inflation and market volatility.

Illiquidity: Both real estate and artworks are highly illiquid, and you cannot instantly liquidate either asset.

Art Asset Yield: Some view art as an investment for a permanent collection and wellbeing, and, some can make money by leasing artworks or renting out artworks.

A guide, for collectors who buy works of art they love, for the pleasure it gives.

Image: Fred Williams (1927-1982) 'Billabong River 1976' Oil on Canvas.

Follow your heart, build up your knowledge and search out the artwork you love of the artist you admire.

Long-Term Utility: Art is a long-term investment (10+ years), and primary return is aesthetic and emotional.

Market Subjectivity: The art market is motivated and inspired by artistic and social trends, and depends entirely on supply and demand, and this balance is uniquely driven by subjective cultural prestige, the economy, provenance (historical ownership) rather than inherent utility.

Buying purely on speculation may lead to bad investments, whereas art you love will always hold Tangibility and intrinsic value to you.

The Reality of Art as an Asset

Image: Brett Whiteley (1939-1992) 'The Unashamed Angophora' 1990 oil and collage branch and mixed media on canvas.

Portfolio Diversification: Art frequently hedges against inflation and can offer stable returns, often compared to investments in gold.

The Math: Indices like the Mei Moses Art Index may perform on par with equities, however, art is not a quick-liquidity asset like stocks or bonds.

How to Blend Passion with Profit: To ensure that your artworks have investment potential, confirm:

Artist's Pedigree: the artist work has been featured in reputable galleries, or museums.

Impeccable Provenance: confirms the artwork history of ownership, which protects against fakes and ensures inherent resale value.

Mei Moses Art Index tracks all live and online auction sales at Sotheby's, Christie's and Phillips for artworks that previously sold at public auction, going back roughly 200 years.

Leasing Artworks

This model acts as a source of recurring revenue and exposure. Businesses (like law firms, hotels, corporate offices) often lease art to upgrade their space without the large upfront purchase cost.

Many businesses are renting artworks as a way to keep their costs down and to have the ability to create new and exciting displays.

Rental Income: Lessees pay a periodic fee (weekly, monthly, annually) to display art.

Lease-to-Own: Some contracts let the client rent the piece with the option to purchase it later, subtracting the previous rental fees from the final sale price.

Exposure: Displaying pieces in public or corporate spaces acts as marketing, often leading to private commissions or outright sales.

Image: Aniela Kos and Arthur Boyd in Galeria Aniela Fine Art gallery in 1995.About Art Prices

Prices fluctuate, and vary from item to item, the quality, provenance and other seemingly unrelated elements can affect the value, and alter price by significant factor.

Individual works of art are traded at individual prices. The value placed on one artwork by the art market may differ from the critical value placed on the same work.

Works of late artists is traded at individual prices in the prevailing collector’s opinions.

Living artists price their own creations individually by merit.

Safeguard Passion and Profit - Buy What You Love

We believe that a knowledgeable buyer, with sharp eyes earns the price, and a collector who anticipates and buys artworks he loves, for the joy its gives.

Too great preoccupation with the price can be counter-productive, often searching for a bargain clouds clear judgment and often exposes a collector to unscrupulous sellers and not genuine art.

The provenance is paramount. Art history has the essential role of supplying attribution, establishing opinion and authenticating what is offered on the art market.

GLOBAL Art Market

The record price paid for The Card Players by Paul Cézanne was $273 million in 2021. In 1987 Vincent van Gogh painting Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers tripled the previous record only two years before, introducing a "new era" in top art investment prices. Since that time, sales of valuable artworks have often been made at auctions but not always, the list below shows some "private sales" at international galleries.
