March 1993

Bundanon was a home of Arthur Boyd, one of the most legendary Australian artists. Arthur & Yvonne Boyd purchased Bundanon in 1979 to conserve the natural flora and fauna of the area to make Wildlife Refuge. Boyd and Nolan created a significant body of work and Arthur Boyd’s paintings was concern about the Shoalhaven River and the natural environment until his death in 1999. Bundanon became the Boyd’s home and Bundanon was listed by the National Trust and on the Register of the National Estate. Arthur lobbying first the NSW State Government and then the Federal Government to accept the gift of the Bundanon properties, heritage buildings, art collection and more. It took almost two decades before it was accepted in March 1993 by Prime Minister Paul Keating on behalf of the Australian people as a unique arts centre for the promotion and facilitation of creative thought, inspiration, discussion and practice. The Bundanon Trust was set up in the same year to administer the gift and realize the dream of Arthur and Yvonne Boyd and Sidney and Mary Nolan. Prime Minister, Paul Keating paid out five million dollars to allow Bundanon be donated to Australian people and listed by the National Bundanon Trust on the Register of Australian National Estate.
