Phillip Hay Biography

Phillip Hay specializes in welded sculpture, both figurative and abstract. Materials include steel, wood, stone and found objects. Also he paints in oils and acrylics on canvas. With over 30 years of experience Phillip Hay is represented in private and corporate collections in Australia and overseas.

In 1980 began Phillip Hay began his artistic carrier. It was a period of introspection and self-exploration in which he was drawn to the performing as well as the visual arts including theatre, dance, stage magic, painting and sculpture, the latter becoming his professional focus.

Often the work is thought- provoking and sometimes humorous. Phillip Hay’s sculptures are carefully constructed and engineered, constituting strong, balanced pieces that are professionally finished.

"Making sculpture comes naturally to me and my imagination is easily brought to life with the direct method of electric arc welding. I also use oxy-acetylene for cutting, brazing and forging the metals I use. From time to time I incorporate such complementary materials as sandstone, wood and found objects."

After working as a qualified electrical mechanic for nine years, Phillip left Sydney to pursue the perilous life of a sculptor. Living and working in a mud-brick house and studio in the Blue Mountains.

Phillip Hay lives and works in a mud brick home that is nestled amongst bush land and is overlooking ironstone escarpments. The native grass and fishpond behind the house attracts parrots, kangaroos and blue tongue lizards, thus creating a sanctuary for artistic pursuits. Today Phillip spends his time refining welding techniques and developing the ideas that come from his passion for nature and music.

Phillip Hay is a high-quality artist living on "the edge" both literally and symbolically, working full-time as a professional artist.
