Spirit of Sir Joseph Banks - "Weeping Banksia"
|
From Petrena Shaw:
Inspiration for this work was
the combination of my love for our extraordinary native plant life,
and the very special person that this piece was named after, Sir
Joseph.
My love for both inspired me to
use artistic license and combine two species of Banksia. Firstly the
seedpods from the Banksia Sirata , opened after a bushfire,
which symbolize new life after hard times. Secondly, the seductive
leaves from the Banksia Robur (Swamp Banksia) which allow
the interplay of water with the bronze, and the nurturing of that
new life.
The realistic nature of the bark
adds the finishing touch to a remarkable sculpture, that will stand
the test of time. It has a spiritual energy of it's own and
certainly has an important cultural significance for Sydney .
Limited to 12 trees worldwide,
this piece is unique for the serious art collector and lover of
bronze. |

Artist Statement
I grew up
surrounded by the natural beauty of Coffs Harbour on the mid north
coast of New South Wales , Australia . With a father who was a
forester and keen fisherman, and a mother who was a nursery worker
and nature lover, it was inevitable that I grew up with a love and
respect for the natural environment.
I look back fondly
on the things I loved most: the wonderful sea creatures and the
beautiful plants that filled my world. As with all artists, I am
inspired by the interesting subject matter that surrounds us
everyday. I hope to capture those inspirations in each piece of
sculpture I create. |
