Artist Statement

"I create sculpture that explores classical forms and personal themes.
My interest is in the synthesis of geometric forms with organic shapes such as the human figure.

The interplay of line and shape is very important to my work.

This creates a modern and contemporary look that still manages to pay homage to the ancient masters of Egypt and Greece.

The main intention of my art is to bring quiet contemplation to the mind and involve the person in the aesthetic experience".

My recent sculpture has been created to reflect different goals and ideas that I have been pursuing over the course of the year. ‘Portrait of a Stallion’ and ‘First Meeting’ are part of an exploration into working with animal forms, something I had not seriously ventured into before.

‘Portrait of a Stallion’ is a straight up stylised study of a horses head, whilst in ‘First Meeting’ I have attempted to capture some of the animal’s body language and emotion. ‘Metamorphosis’ came about rather unexpectedly.

Looking at an older sculpture of mine, my wife complimented me by saying that the sculpture could not be improved upon, that any changes to the form would ruin its ‘aesthetic balance’.

I took that as a challenge and Metamorphosis is the result.

New from old, change and rebirth.

The last two sculptures ‘Leap’ and ‘Flight’ best exemplify the direction I am taking with my figurative work.

My aim is to inject the work with a sense of movement and a feeling of lightness that belies the solidity of bronze.

Building on the aesthetic of line, geometry and form.
