Gaye Spencer provides a powerful series of almost
monochromatic paintings (and sculpture) dealing with the human
figure, dramatic, poignant and ever so subtly generating a current
of surreal danger in some of the work. A style which has become
familiar to the Australian art world with painters such as Delasield,
Cook and Tim Storrier…as opposed to some of the European artists
using similar imagery, Gaye’s content is purely sensual, not
doom-laden and morbid like the work of Salvador Dali for instance.
Two facts are outstanding: the display of excellent brush technique,
in some instances almost to the level of airbrush application; the
other is Spencer’s ability to imbue great sensuality into her work,
coupled with excellent figure drawing skills. It is obvious that her
work is of more then passing interest, as some of it is disappearing
overseas rather rapidly…”
