Esther Giles Nampitjinpa born around 1948 is a dynamic force in Australian art, her work is represented by private and corporate collection around the world.  She grew up ‘in the bush’ with her family, after her younger brother died, her family decided to move to the then newly established government settlement of Papunya. Esther has returned to live in her country with family members. She is known for her skills as a prominent painter.

NOTES:
This painting represents the traditional homelands associated with Esther's ancestral heritage. The central motif depicts the land forms consisting of sand dunes known as "tali" and the rocks escarpments known as "puli". Each of these environments provides a unique source of bush foods and medicinal plants. These designs are often used in body decoration during traditional ceremonies. It represent physical markings that the ancestors have provided to give evidence of their activities during the time of creation. The outer patters depict the orientation of the landscape which follows a distinct east-west aligned effect by prevailing winds.

Esther has returned to live in her country with family members. She is known for her skill as a traditional basket weaver as well as her prominence as a painter.

Birth site: Yumara which is to the north of Docker River in Western Australia.

Language:  Ngaatjatjarra and Pintupi / Luritja.

Historical: Esther is the sister of Tjawina Porter Nampitjinpa.
